I Were Right

Thu, 21 Feb 2008 20:22:00

More than anything else, this here blag is a place for me to share my completely unsubstantiated, poorly researched judgments and predictions. My journalistic insouciance leaves me pretty vulnerable to criticism and counterarguments. As an example, in a post I authored about the intense competition between the trio of independently owned coffee shops near my office, I thoughtlessly lobbed this gem out:

Starbucks wouldn’t stand a chance on University Place.

As Dave quickly noted in the comments, there is in fact a Starbucks on University Place and 8th Street that seems to be doing just fine. Clearly Dave is well-trained in the high art of debate.

But as it turns out - and I’m just learning this - what I get in return for putting my credibility on the line with each and every post is the opportunity to say “I told you so” when I end up in the right. And so it’s with great pleasure that I point you to the latest developments on University Place, as reported by Racked:

This is just, well, unprecedented: a Starbucks location—21 East 8th Street in Greenwich Village—has closed!

So when it comes to coffee, it takes about three Davids to bring down Goliath. Well that and the competing Starbucks 2 blocks away from the one that closed. Regardless, commence victory dance.
